All Ireland Féile comes to Tyrone this weekend
The 2014 All Ireland Féile na nGael will be hosted throughout Ulster in the weekend ahead and the GAA Handball events will be largely staged at Tyrone venues. Carickmore, Loughmacrory, Beragh and Killyclogher will play host to major events in the 40×20 series with the main boys finals down for decision in Beragh on Sunday and the Girls Division 1 and 2 finals in Loughmacrory. Effectively this event is the All Ireland Club Championship for Under 14 level in boys and girls codes.
Overall, Tyrone will go into this highly prestigious national GAA event with top class chances of securing glory in a host of grades. Carrickmore will be hosting the Boys Division 1 and 2 grade throughout Saturday and have favourites credentials in the Boys Division 1 grade. Their challenge will be spearheaded by All Ireland Under 14 doubles champions, Cormac Munroe and Darragh Canavan, while they also have Ulster Under 13 and World 11 & Under champion from 2012, Lorcan McBride as well as Ciara Mullan and Cahir Munroe. One of their biggest tests looks set to come from Monaghan’s team of Justas Daminskas, Eoghan McGinnity, Jakob Skzup and Caolan Myles and Mallow (Cork) and Cullohill (Laois) will also hold major claims of securing the honours. Loughmacrory’s team of Antoin Fox, Ronan Curran, Dara Curran, Shane Grimes and Diarmaid Gallagher will also go into the event with hopes of doing well and there is no doubt there is top class handball in store at one of the most illustrious team events of GAA Handball at All Ireland level. Action gets underway from 10am on Saturday with everything geared towards the Division 1 and 2 finals commencing from 12noon in Beragh on Sunday.
Tyrone have a great record in the Féile na nGael in recent times with Breacach having completed famous back-to-back triumphs in the Division 1 grade in 2011 and 2012. Carrickmore delivered a most impressive three-in-a-row in the Division 1 Féile na nGael from 2000-2002 and Loughmacrory captured the county’s first ever Division 1 Féile na nGael title back in 1984 and followed up with a second success in 2003.
Tyrone have never captured a Division 1 girls Feile title but go into the 2014 event with high hopes of success in the form of a strong Breacach team. Elizabeth McGarvey, Michaela McCartan, Emer Kerr and Meabh McCrystal will put in a very strong showing in the premier grade of ladies club handball where they will face tough opposition in Tulla (Clare), Leixlip (Kildare) and Clann Eireann (Armagh), a trio of clubs who have taken success in Division 1 to their county in the past three runnings of the Tournament. The Breacach team are Tyrone’s only ever winners of a Feile title, winning the Division 2 title twelve months ago, and in 2014 it will be Loughmacrory who will challenge for that title. Caitlin Conway, Mairead Fox, Aideen Curran and Michaela Curran are the Loughmacrory team in that grade, which is scheduled for Loughmacrory on Saturday from 10am.
Meanwhile Ceapach club will enter Féile na nGael for the first time in many years and will also play host to the Boys Division 6 Grade. There has been great development at underage level in recent years in Ceapach and they will be hopeful of a bold showing against Cullohill (Laois), Na Fianna (Dublin), Kingscourt (Cavan), Brian Boru (Dublin) and Sean MacCumhaiils (Donegal). Breacach will complete Tyrone’s Feile challenge when they travel to compete in the Division 5 grade in Scotstown, Monaghan.
The National Feile na nGael parade will take place at The Athletic Grounds, Armagh, on Friday 20th June.
