Gemma McHale Memorial 5k in Aghyaran
A 5km run and walk is being held in memory of 20-year-old Aghayaran woman, Gemma McHale, who was tragically killed in a car crash in May 2012.
The Gemma McHale Memorial 5k will be held this Friday 18th May in Aghyaran with proceeds from the event going to Breast Cancer Campaign/SCAT Bone Cancer. Gemma often participated in fund raising events for different charities.
“In honour of Gemma’s memory we continue to fundraise for charities that are close to the people of the area we live in,” explained Gemma’s brother Kieran.
“The reason I have chosen these charities is that a family member is undergoing treatment at the minute for breast cancer and a little 11 year old lad, Damien Mc Hugh who resides in our parish of Aghyaran has developed a rare bone disorder which may develop into bone cancer. He has what is called ‘Ollier’s Disease’ which affects one in 100,000 people.
“This disorder involves the development of benign tumours on the bone and 25% of sufferers eventually develop cancer. We approached Damien’s parents offering our support and help. They were delighted that we had thought of them this year for Gemma’s 5k run/walk,” he added.
“Last year’s run raised £10,000 for the Musgrave Brain Injury Unit and the year before they raised almost £7,000 for the Coombe hospital in Dublin where our daughter Joanne had given birth to twins Jack and Jemma, born 9 weeks prematurely weighing just 3lb 3oz and 2lb 9oz. These two little miracles arrived just nine months after Gemma’s death.
“We would hope to raise £10,000 plus this year for these two charities.
