Loughmacrory set for another very exciting Lough5 Race this New Year’s Eve
The annual Lough5 Race has become very much a standing dish on the Festive Running Menu and the 2016 New Year’s Eve Race by the Lough promises to be every bit as exciting and atmospheric as ever.
A hugely popular 5 mile race, the event attracts top runners from throughout Ireland and in particular sees a very string challenge from right across the province of Ulster.
Having the unique distinction of being the very last running event in the Calendar Year, there have been over 600 competitors now for a number of seasons since the inaugural race made such an impact and lasting impression back on 31st December 2009.
Bernie O’Donnell, one of the founding members of the original Lough5 Race Committee, is again relishing the prospect of a packed community event in Loughmacrory as the preparations to ring in the New Year will take centre-stage.
“We have seen such a rapid rise in the Lough5 Race but in the sport too in general. Since it’s inception, the Lough5 has always attracted the very best runners from across the province and people have been so enthusiastic each year due to the unique route, which finishes around the Lough, the incredible atmosphere and of course the hospitality and occasion itself on New Year’s Eve in Loughmacrory”
In 2016 there will be the added excitement of a “Team Event” as part of the Lough5 Race, with Team Prizes for Male/Female team of 3 Runners.
A prize of £100 for first male/female runner will again be on the cards and the same prize for anyone who can break the Lough5 Course Record:
- Course Record, MALE: 24.42
- Course Record, FEMALE: 29.04
There will again be unique Lough5 Race Tee-Shirts for the first 500 participants and a draw specially in place for all the Walkers who take part, with some terrific spot prizes.
Proceeds raised from the 2016 Lough5 Race will go to the local charities – Termonmaguirc Friendly Care Group, Termon Cancer Patients Fund and a donation to The Mary Anderson Foundation.
