People in Focus: Captain Brendan Boyle playing successful tune with Harps…

Share Story Facebooktwitterpinterestlinkedin

The success story of young Omagh soccer club, Strathroy Harps, has been immense to say the least and at the weekend they cemented that most impressive rise up the ladder again.

In securing a 3-in-a-row in the Mulhern Cup, the club were also completing a famous domestic treble of title wins in the current season. Needless to say that has sparked some exciting celebrations once again.

Captain of the treble winners this season, Brendan Boyle, is evidently relishing a golden era for the club and Tyrone Life caught up with ‘Benny’ for the latest in our People in Focus series and we find out that Benny, prior to his success with the Harps, also captained Killybegs in the 2013 Donegal Senior Football Championship Final v Glenswilly. All the Fun and favourites are in there too…

Q&A, People in Focus profile with…
Benny Boyle, Strathroy Harps Captain

Tell us a bit about Strathroy Harps and how you came to be involved in playing soccer with the club…

Well the Harps had just won 2 Irish Juniors and Linney was looking to add a few more faces to give the league and Mulhern Cup a good go. He phoned me out of the blue one day and, after some stern words from him to get my act together and a glowing reference from Marty Flanagan, I was on my way to the Harps! One of the best phone calls I think I’ve ever got!!!

Tell us about the current season, winning the Mercer Cup and completing the treble in the Mulhern Cup…

Well I suppose winning is a thing this team has gotten used to. We don’t play to lose and Linney and Shane Horisk have us well grounded to keep that mentality going!

Tell us about the position you play, your role in the team and the level of training you do in order to maintain this level of play…

Where do I start…… I play centre-back and Linney has made me captain this year, something that I am very very proud of!

I train hard, no matter what I do, and I do whatever I can to keep fit. You have to, to be able to play in this team!

Tell us about your goals, targets, etc… for the future on the playing field?

I suppose a lot of people are expecting me to retire after the season we have been having but to be honest I think I’ve more to give and when I don’t, then I’ll stop! The biggest aim would be to get my hands on the Irish junior cup!!!

Hobbies & Other interests: GAA and the odd nite out socialising, lol

Tyrone Life – My thoughts on…

Where you came from: Tell us a bit about your community/village where you grew up?

I’m from a little fishing town, Killybegs in Donegal. Not much to do there only play football so I had no choice really lol

School Years: Can you tell us a bit about your school years, three big moments that stand out for you and who would have had a big influence on you in those years…

In my school boy days I was more of a GAA player, the soccer was just a kick-about. Thank god that changed, lol

Characters in the Community: Tell us about some of the big characters in your community/village when you were growing up and any memories, stories or ‘nicknames’ that jump out when talking about them?

I can’t let this one go by without mentioning a few Strathroy men!!

I’ll start with Austy Minnagh – a true story teller! A Harps man who loves the craic and a pint!

Shane Horisk – he’s Linney’s right hand man but what a character! A big gentle giant who can do any impression of almost any accent and have you in tears of laughter!

Lastly I’m gonna go with the gaffer, Seamus Fanthorpe. Not alone does he manage us, but he runs the bar we drink in as well. To say that people look up to him is an understatement, his generosity is second to none and I’ll tell you one thing, if you were ever in bother he’s the man to phone lol lol

Benny Boyle is congratulated by Ryan Sharkey ater scoring a goal

Star players: Tell us about 3 star players you have played alongside and what impresses you about their game?

Marty Flanagan – could pass a ball in a phone box. Unreal reader of the game. He used to say to me if I didn’t head it, he would always have been there to mop it up!! Best peno taker you’ll get!

Simy O’Neill – the lads call him Berbatov, I’ll just leave it at that!!

Ryan Mayse – currently with Ballinmallard. Quality all over this lad. If he could just finish we might see him on the TV a bit more often lol

People in Focus: Ryan Mayse celebrating with Strathroy Harps

Rising stars: Can you tell us about three other rising stars you have seen or played against that you think have a big future in the sport…

Sean McCrory – left back. This lad didn’t come out of the house 3 years ago and then out of the blue he’s been one of our best players. Good on the ball, loves to join in attack and can defend when he needs to! But we pray we have no night games because he’s blind as a bat lol lol

Aidy McCaff – a star already to most of us but, because of one thing or another, has never really got the reviews he deserves! Absolute baller. Turns a game from nothing and his deliveries are out of the top drawer!!

Damon Teague – complete engine. Worked so hard to get in the team, has came up with some important goals and deserves all that’s in front of him because he’s earned it. Big future ahead of him with the harps!

Social Life – My thoughts on…

Tell us about what things you enjoy best about the ‘weekend’ and favourite things to do?

Fond of letting the hair down and going for a pint!!

“Mulhern cup final last year – got man of the match.”

Tell us about 3 best events/concerts/sporting occasions that stand out for you and why?

  •  92′ all Ireland final -Donegals first time winning it!
  • Mulhern cup final last year – got man of the match. Proud day for me and my family
  • Captain killybegs to a senior GAA final in 2013!! Biggest day in our house in 25 years – pity about the result 🙁

Benny Boyle with Killybegs – Pre 2013 senior final: Leon Kelly, Glenswilly and Benny Boyle, Killybegs captain with referee Ian Molloy.

Could you tell us what places you have travelled to (anywhere in the world)?

I haven’t really travelled much – bit of a home bird!
