The 9th running of the Lough5 New Year’s Eve run proved to be a record-breaking one with over 650 runners/walkers taking to the mid-Tyrone 5 Mile route which concludes with a lap of the lough.

On a weekend which had seen heavy snow, gale-force winds and heavy rain it was a welcome boost to organisers and competitors alike to enjoy the occasion on a very mild day as the New year approaches.

On the business end of the proceedings the mens open title was won by Scott Rankin of Foyle Valley Athletic club with a time of 25.17, (the third quickest time ever recorded on the route) finishing 31 seconds ahead of Letterkenny AC’s Danny Mooney (2nd Place) and Acorns AC’s Eoin Hughes who was in 3rd place with a time of 26.44.

The big story of the day though was the Ladies Open title being won by Tattyreagh’s 14 year old runner, Sorcha Mullan. The brilliant young teenager finished with a time of 32.37, an impressive finish indeed. Helena Quinn (Termoneeny RC) crossed the line in 33:01 for 2nd place, before Donna Evans of Clones AC secured the final podium place in 33:49 (3rd place).

Holly Gibson with Braveheart supporters after completing the 9th Annual Lough5 Race on New years Eve

It was another terrific event to close out 2018 and one which had another significant story and build-up with Fintona’s Holly Gibson completing her first race since enduring ‘Open Heart Surgery’ just 9 months ago. We featured Holly in our People in Focus series and it was fantastic to see such an inspirational achievement unfold as we move into another New Year.
